Essential facts about Tanzania

Is Tanzania safe for tourists?

Tanzania is one of East Africa’s most welcoming countries, with a stable tourism industry and millions of visitors travelling safely each year. Major safari destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and the southern parks of Ruaha and Nyerere are professionally managed and safe to explore. Zanzibar and the coastal areas are also safe for travellers. Basic travel wisdom applies – keep valuables secure in cities and avoid walking alone at night.

With a tailored Africa&You itinerary, we ensure every transfer is organised and every destination is carefully vetted for your safety.

What are the must-see sights in Tanzania?

Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most celebrated wilderness areas. The Serengeti National Park is the stage for the Great Migration, an awe-inspiring spectacle of millions of wildebeest and zebra moving across endless plains. The Ngorongoro Crater offers exceptional wildlife viewing within a breathtaking volcanic caldera, often called Africa’s Garden of Eden. Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks provide a quieter, more intimate safari experience with beautiful landscapes and excellent birdlife. In the south, Ruaha and Nyerere (Selous) National Parks offer remote, wild landscapes and superb predator action for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures.

Off the coast, the island of Zanzibar invites travellers to unwind on white sandy beaches surrounded by the turquoise Indian Ocean and explore historic Stone Town.

Whether you’re into epic wildlife, remote wilderness, or island relaxation, Tanzania has something for everyone.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what you’re hoping to experience. Tanzania’s dry season, from June to October, is ideal for safaris across most parks, with the best game viewing and comfortable temperatures. The Great Migration typically moves through the Serengeti from June to September, with the larger river crossings in July and August (depending on location – please note the river crossings can be very crowded with safari vehicles & better sightings can be found in different areas of the reserve). The short rainy season (November to December) and the long rains (March to May) bring lush scenery, fewer tourists, and excellent birdlife, with lower rates for budget-conscious travellers. Zanzibar and the coast are warm year-round, though best enjoyed outside of the rainy months.

Tanzania’s varied climate makes it a great destination throughout the year.

Do I need a visa or vaccinations?

Most travellers, including those from the UK, EU, USA, Australia, and Canada, require a visa for Tanzania, which can be obtained online before travel or on arrival. Always check the latest entry requirements with your local embassy or consulate.

A yellow fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from a yellow fever region. Routine travel vaccines are advised, and malaria prophylaxis is recommended throughout much of the country, especially in safari areas and in Zanzibar. Always check with your local GP or travel clinic about recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention for your health background. It’s also wise to carry comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical coverage.

How much does a trip to Tanzania cost?

Tanzania offers excellent value for world-class safari experiences. Luxury safaris range from US$1000 to US$3000+ per person per night, depending on the region and season, with accommodation, meals, park fees, and safari activities typically included in the nightly rate. Mid-range options can start around US$400 – $800+ per person per night (excluding transportation & park fees).

Zanzibar’s luxury beach resorts typically cost between US$400 and US$1000+ per person per night. Light aircraft transfers between parks can increase costs but dramatically reduce travel time and add to the adventure.

Overall, Tanzania offers an excellent balance of wildlife, culture, and coastal relaxation at competitive prices.

Testimonials

We have just returned from an anniversary trip through Kenya & Tanzania with Africa&You, and I can tell you it was beyond expectations. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to express how well this trip was organized and we sincerely appreciate the people who made it happen. It was a once in a lifetime experience and we enjoyed every minute.

S BRENNAN

Probably the most memorable trip ever and our itinerary was perfect. It felt as though we had 4 vacations in 1 because each part of our trip was different and unique.

A JENKINS

Africa&You were outstanding. We wanted more authentic, smaller, less touristy camps/lodges/guest houses and they really delivered. The itinerary (where we went, our accommodations, etc) were spot-on. We took the path less traveled, which made our trip one for the books. Their service was very high touch; they checked with each venue to make sure we were being well taken care of. We highly recommend Africa&You!
